CHEMEX® Classic Series

Brewing perfect coffee should not only be easy, but also beautiful.  This enduring philosophy is what lead to Dr. Schlumbohm to invent and patent the iconic CHEMEX coffeemaker in 1941.  The Classic Series is our most popular selection of coffeemakers, made from pure, lab grade borosilicate glass and formed into the elegant and timeless hourglass shape we have all come to love. The wooden collar and rawhide tie add a functional and stylish detail to this flawless work of art.

How to Brew

Step 1. Get into the grind
Grind your favorite whole bean coffee to a medium coarse ground.

Step 2. Filter up
Open a CHEMEX Bonded™ Coffee Filter into a cone shape so that one side of the cone has three layers, and place it into the top of the CHEMEX Coffeemaker. The thick three-layer portion should cover the pouring spout.

Step 3: The scoop
Put one rounded tablespoon of ground coffee for every 5 oz. cup into the filter cone. Feel free to use more if you prefer it stronger; our CHEMEX Coffeemaker brewing process eliminates bitterness and acidity.

Step 4: Let it bloom
Once you have brought the appropriate amount of water to a boil, remove it from the heat and allow it to stop boiling vigorously. Pour a small amount of water in a circular motion over the coffee grounds to wet them, and wait for about 30 seconds for the grounds to “bloom”.

Step 5: First pour
After the grounds bloom, slowly pour the water over the grounds while keeping the water level well below the top of the CHEMEX Coffeemaker (a quarter inch or more).

Step 6: Brew on
Slowly pour the remaining water over the grounds, using a circular or back-and-forth motion as you pour to ensure an even saturation of the coffee.

Step 7: Toss the filter
Once the desired amount of coffee is brewed, lift the filter with spent grounds out of the brewer and discard. Our filters are biodegradable and compostable.

Final Step:
 Enjoy the perfect cup
Pour your freshly made coffee into your CHEMEX® mug and indulge in the flavor.

Cleaning your CHEMEX

The glass coffeemakers can be put into the dishwasher once the collar and rawhide are removed.  However, to avoid breakage please be sure that the carafe is secure and not bumping up next to any other dishes.

Other ways you can clean your CHEMEX:

  • Remove the collar and tie and handwash. Using the coffeemaker cleaning brush is an easy way to do this.
  •  Swirl warm soapy water in the carafe and rinse.
  • Use the coffeemaker cleaning brush

Classic Series FAQs

How many ounces are the cup sizes used for the CHEMEX? We measure our cup size in 5 ounce increments.

Are the coffeemakers dishwasher safe? Yes!  See Cleaning & Maintenance Tab for more info.

What is the protrusion in the glass on the front of the coffeemaker?
Lovingly referred to as the “bellybutton”, it indicates the halfway measuring point on the coffeemaker for sizes 5 to 10 cup and the full line for the 3 Cup coffeemaker. The 13-cups lower bellybutton marks the halfway point, the upper bellybutton marks a full pot.

Can I make less coffee than the size of the coffeemaker? Yes!  You can make up to the ounce amount of the size coffeemaker you have or make less. Just adjust your coffee and water recipe to brew however many cups you would like.

Are the coffeemakers and mugs microwavable? None of our products should be reheated in the microwave.

Where are the coffeemakers made? The glass for the Classic Series and Glass Handle series are made in both Taiwan and Germany. The glass for the Handblown Series is made in Croatia.

What are the differences between the Handlown vrs Classic and Glass Handle series? Is there a difference in how they function?

  • There is no difference in how they function.  All our coffeemakers are made with high quality borosilicate glass and will produce the same fantastic results.
  • The Classic Series and Glass Handle series are machine made while the Handblown coffeemakers are blown into molds by skilled glassblowers in Croatia.
  • The glass used to form the Handblown coffeemakers is thicker, a little heavier, and has a very slight green color.
  • There are no logos on the Handblown coffeemakers.
  • The glass used for the Classic and Glass Handle series is thinner, lighter in weight, but still a very high-quality borosilicate and is crystal clear.  These coffeemakers will have either have our "X" logo or have "CHEMEX" in white lettering on their base

What are the vegan options for the CHEMEX coffeemakers?
We offer many different and beautiful glass handle coffeemakers that are made fully from borosilicate glass.
